Hassayampa River Preserve Valentine's Day Excursion

These are pictures from our recent family outing to the Hassayampa River Preserve in Wickenburg, AZ. DH was trying to decide what we should do for V-day and came up with the most amazing fun idea--visit this place (for only $5 an adult you can't beat that!) We stopped by Trader Joes and got lots of picnic stuff because they have a picnic area and then we went a walk down that very pretty smooth trail. They have a few different trails and all of them are really neat.
Most rivers, including the Hassayampa, run underground in AZ, but this is one spot where the Hassayampa river runs above ground all year long. The picture above is actually a man-made lake they have there, the river is actually just beyond us in the first picture (of the family).
Because of all the water there are lots of unique plants and birds that come to visit. We had a blast--and the trail wasn't too long for the kids to walk either, actually they ran most of it!
We have been doing a lot of fun nature-y type things lately...we had to go to Tempe (SO far from where we live!) for DH's job and the traffic was so bad that we missed our appointment! We had been wanting to go to the Desert Botanical Gardens for years now and just never made it over and decided to just do it so the trip wasn't a total loss....turns out the second Tuesday of the month is FREE! Exactly the day we went! What a blessing right!? and next month they will have the butterfly exhibit which I have wanted to see for SO long!
We had a really good time discovering our new favorite desert trees (Boojum tree on the top of the list!) and desert plants.
Oh, and because of the garden exhibits on Native American life, I had to explain to my 3 year old what "Native Americans" are--I might not have done the best most "PC" job because if you were to ask her she'd say "they are indians that live far away" (because she wanted to know where they were and I told her they live on reservations....which was a place that was far away...) lol!
